Mindfulness With Music

Published 11 May 2021 / 2 min read

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a mental state in which you are engaged in the present moment, acknowledging and accepting your thoughts and feelings free of distraction and judgement. Mindfulness is not about clearing the mind, but simply noticing what is there, your thoughts, surroundings, and feelings and making peace with them.

Mindfulness can be difficult and so listening to music can be an effective addition to experiencing the present moment.

What’s the difference between mindfulness and meditation? Where meditation is a temporary state of mind, mindfulness is more of a ‘way of life’. Quite simply, meditation is a training technique for mindfulness.

Music and mindfulness

You may think that adding music will make it harder to focus and engage in what you are doing, but music has great benefits and can be an effective way to help you stay attentive.

“Music alone does wonders for our health and wellness. But if you combine music with mindfulness you create more space for the healing benefits”. Psychotherapist Maria Millett

What are the healing benefits of listening to music?

Music has a powerful effect on our body, without us even realising. Our bodies are made up of up to 60% water and so listening to music can raise our bodily vibrations, promoting energy flow and circulation. The frequency waves end up synchronising with our brainwaves, which in turn have physical and emotional benefits. Helping you sleep, reducing anxiety and feeling more energised. What music should I listen to?

Music with lyrics can sometimes be harder to focus on and can encourage distraction. But in the end it comes down to personal preference and what you find works best for you. If you are new to practicing mindfulness with music, I’d recommend trying out a different genre each time you work on being mindful and see what helps you gain more focus. Additionally listening through headphones or earphones can sometimes help shut out external noise and help boost your concentration.

How to meditate with music?

  1. Sit in a comfortable position.
  2. Close your eyes if you feel that helps you focus.
  3. Focus on your breathing –  breathe in and out through your nose.
  4. Slow your breathing to long, deep and gentle breathes.
  5. Feel the weight of your body grounding to your seat
  6. Allow yourself to only listen to the music, take notice of the beat, the different instruments being played, shifts in volume. Does the song bring up a memory? Does your body react differently to different parts of the song? Let yourself flow through the music.
  7. Check back in with your body, breath and mind.

Let yourself become fully immersed in audio; feel your senses heighten, allow every part of your mind and body be absorbed by the sound and become a part of the music.
