Digital audio sound-waves are passed through the algorithm. Phase information is analysed, replicated and adjusted to recreate the space and timing intricacies that would occur in the real world. This doesn’t change the sound itself, but makes it sound fuller, richer and more detailed to the human ear – as it would in real life.

 

In blind A/B tests run by the Smithfield Collective in 2020 75% of 124 respondents stated they had a strong preference for the IRIS version of audio verses standard MP3; describing IRIS as like a live experience, more immersive, richer, deeper and more complete.

Scientific research

 

Findings from a Goldsmith’s University pilot EEG research study into how IRIS affects the brain conducted by Professor Joydeep Bhattacharya, Director of Research, Department of Psychology, Goldsmiths, University of London.

 

A study was conducted into the effects IRIS had on the brain when subjects were subjected to audio extracts with our IRIS patented algorithm, comparing to normal MP3. An EEG study was completed whilst listening to the same musical excerpts in these different formats, Plain MP3 and IRIS.

Beta power

FOCUSED

Is dominant in our conscious waking state and is active when undertaking cognitive tasks. Beta is a ‘fast’ brainwave activity, present when we are alert, attentive and engaged in problem solving, making decisions or trying to focus on a task.

Gamma power

RELAXED

Is hugely beneficial for achieving a state of balance and calm and can be heightened through meditation. Gamma is important for data processing, relaxation and can be important in developing memory retention levels.

Frontal alpha asymmetry

POSITIVE AND MOTIVATED

A marked increase in frontal alpha asymmetry is accepted scientifically as a measure of the underlying positivity of feelings and motivational state. Frontal left lobe indicates positivity and approach motivation, right lobe is the counter to this.

High frequency brain response by IRIS

From the EEG images to the right taken from the pilot testing, it is clear there is a larger substantial higher frequency response over frontal brain regions for IRIS compared to MP3. This frontal high frequency measurement is a neuromarker of reward and preference. There is a clear indication of increased activity in frontal left lobe demonstrating an increase in positivity and approach motivation.

Signs of a Healthy Heart

The variation in the time interval between consecutive heartbeats in milliseconds. An increased HRV is connected to reduced mortality and an overall improvement in well-being.

Maintaining a healthy heart rhythm; a lower heart rate can be a key marker of reduced stress levels and overall well-being.

Impact on autonomic (ECG) responses

 

IRIS for Wellness Soundscapes (and Classical music) led to:

• Lower heart rate (a relaxed state),
• Higher variability (sign of a more healthier heart rhythm)
• Increasing low-frequency (LF), decreasing high frequency (HF), and a higher LF:HF (sign of a reduced stress response)

Summary

 

In Goldsmith’s University EEG Testing on the effects of IRIS, the Wellness and Spoken Word genre showed the most consistent effects when comparing both IRIS algorithms to standard MP3 audio. We continue to build on our findings with further EEG research scheduled early 2021.
